Offshore Account

Offshore Account was formed a little over 2 years ago. The original line-up
consisted of two long term barbershoppers, Dave Dana who was singing Bass
and Gary Batchelor, a long time Baritone (choosing to sing Tenor). They were
joined by two others, who had come into Barbershop via a “Learn to Sing”
course a year or so earlier, Dave Bryant singing Baritone and Graham Maitland
singing the Lead part.
At this time the quartet had no name and the focus was on learning the craft of
quartet singing, especially for the newer members.
After several months the original Bass singer (Dave D if you remember) decided
to move over and allow a new Bass, Dave Pointer (see the Dave theme here,
maybe we should have named the quartet Dave!).
At the time Dave P was very new to the game, having only sung with the chorus
for a few months and it was a challenge for him, but he has come through with
flying colours and is now a well established member of the quartet.
The naming of the quartet proved to be more of a challenge than learning the
songs. Having agreed a name we discovered a few weeks later that it was
already being used. We eventually settled on “Offshore Account” and this has
now been registered.
As already stated the focus of the quartet was on craft and the repertoire of
songs learnt was small but challenging, with the emphasis on getting them right.
Coaching was sought to help hone the skills, culminating in August 2009 with a
weekend at Harmony College in Nottingham, which focussed on our
performance.
After a very positive experience at Harmony College, we decided to entered the
national quartet preliminaries these were held in November 2009 at the
Birmingham Conservatoire. We learned two songs specifically for the contest
and acquitted ourselves reasonably well. We will be back there in 2010 now we
know what to expect.
Throughout this time we have been adding to our repertoire and can now offer a
polished set of songs. We often fill a quartet spot when the chorus is singing at
an engagement and also sing at events independently.
